  • 10 tips for working in show biz

    As I quickly approach a decade of dabbling in “The Biz”, I find myself pausing for a moment and doing a double take at all the crap I’ve done. And I use the word “crap” in the most positive sense. As in, “Hey, check out all that crap”.

    I’ve worked with lots of people. Many of them lovely. Many of them talented. Many of them just once. I’ve been on both sides of the camera and the mic, and pressed about a billion buttons.

    And even though I’m just 26, every time it looks like I might be turning a casual gig into a career, I discover there’s a new way you can lose a job. Hence I’ve learned a few important lessons in my time. Lessons I would like to share with you.

    So whether you’re a veteran of the entertainment industry, a bright eyed wannabe or someone who wouldn’t leave the security of your suit and cubical to touch a microphone with a ten foot boom pole, here are some handy tips for working in show biz:

    1. Tell people what they want to hear.

    The best way to get ahead in the glamorous world of show biz is by making everyone happy. Don’t disappoint anyone. Ever. Was it a good show tonight? Absolutely! How’s my hair? Sensational! Are you sure you’ll be able to edit all those scripts by yourself by tonight? I sure am!

    Remember, promises are cheap. It doesn’t cost you anything to make a promise. Make as many as you can as fast as you can. Don’t stop for any reason. No promise is too ridiculous. Just make sure you can blame someone else if whatever you promised doesn’t just happen on its own. Make sure you lie on your CV too.

    2. Show up late, or not at all.

    Call times are just a guide. If you’re told to turn up on set at 8AM, that just means you can set your alarm for 8AM. Don’t bother factoring in travel time or traffic. Feel free to stop for petrol or a coffee on the way in. And take the scenic route – after all, you don’t want to be stressed when you arrive just after 10.

    Production managers factor all these things in when they write the schedule. They hate it when you turn up early. So turn up late. And they usually schedule more people than they need. So no pressure to turn up at all if you’ve got a better offer. No need to even call. You’ve got to look out for number one because hey, who else will?

    3. Don’t waste producers’ time.

    Producing anything is a tough, grueling, thankless job. Especially television. The last thing a time poor producer wants to hear is some lackey asking permission to use the bathroom or eat in the studio or record an iPhone video during a take. Just do it. The less they know you’re even there, the better.

    4. If you break it, keep it secret.

    If you find yourself using a piece of equipment you haven’t been trained on (See Lesson 1) and inevitably end up breaking it, best to keep it to yourself. The next person to use it will probably discover the problem anyway. And most likely just in time for an important shoot.

    5. Don’t bother replying to emails.

    So much communication is done via email these days. Emails are a dime a dozen. No one seriously expects you to acknowledge every single email a producer sends you. Hell, they don’t even expect you to READ them. So don’t worry if you just want to select all and delete. An empty inbox will mean your porn streams faster.

    6. Give out phone numbers.

    Everyone in show biz has a mobile phone. It’s by far the fastest way to get in contact with anyone. So if you come across the phone number of someone important, write it down, save it, and give it to anyone who asks for it. Crew phone numbers, executive phone numbers and ESPECIALLY talent phone numbers.

    You’re even well within your rights to ask for a few bucks when giving out the phone number of someone semi-famous. Why not trade it for a favour or a job? Remember, there’s no right to privacy in show biz. If Russell Crowe didn’t want people calling him anytime 24/7, he wouldn’t hand-write his digits on a business card and leave it in his agent’s locked briefcase.

    7. Steal.

    It’s a tough business, show business. So give yourself a helping hand and help yourself. A catering table is the industry’s gift to YOU. Keep coming back for more, especially if you’re not even working on the shoot.

    But don’t stop there. Steal anything you can get your hands on. Equipment, footage, other people’s ideas. “Ideas” don’t belong to anyone. Use them immediately for yourself or stow them away for a few years. And invest in a pair of bolt cutters. They’ll pay for themselves after the second or third locker.

    8. Don’t bother with back-ups.

    Delete footage and data once you’ve used it, especially emergency back-up stuff. Holding on to raw footage is a waste of time. Save over it or get rid of it. You’ll never need it. Neither will anyone else. Don’t even keep it “just in case”. Keep your hard drive free for more porn.

    9. Act like a big star.

    If you want people to take you seriously in show biz, you have to act like a big star. People respect jerks. So make outrageous demands. And don’t bother to remember people’s names, particularly subordinates you’ll never encounter again in the future. They should be happy just to be sharing the same oxygen as you. Make no mistake, you’ll be the most respected camera operator in the studio.

    10. Sleep with anyone and everyone.

    Fuck everyone! This is show biz! Sex brings cast and crew together. So sleep with all of them. Especially people you’re going to be working closely with in the future. And remember, wrap parties are easy picking 😉

    So get out there and schmooze, lie, cheat, steal and sleep your way to fame and fortune in the greatest business of all.

  • Rexy Radio and The Croc Rock

    Ever wondered how David M. Green pays his rent?

    I’m back at Crocmedia in 2013 and since the end of March, I’ve spent every weekend panelling their flagship syndicated radio show “AFL Live”. And I’m still loving it.

    By process of attrition, I’ve become their senior panel operator and last weekend I racked up by 500th hour “on the buttons”, also surpassing the number of hours I spent panelling at Melbourne Talk Radio. This is now the longest stretch of time I’ve held a job in radio without being replaced by a computer or the station shutting down.

  • 2012. Highest of highs. Lowest of lows.

    I started 2012 in much the same way I end it: Relaxing in Adelaide, uncertain about my state of employment when I return to Melbourne.

    12 months ago, I was on my Christmas break from panelling “The Steve Vizard Show” on Melbourne Talk Radio. Instead of finding a fill-in host for 4 weeks, MTR instead took a network feed from 2GB in Sydney. This sparked rumours the show wouldn’t be coming back in 2012.

    My plan was simply to work there as long as possible. That ended up being 7 weeks.

    It was just a regular day at the radio station on 2 March 2012. The Vizard crew left early to have some farewell drinks in St Kilda to celebrate assistant producer Gen’s last day. We were sitting outside on Fitzroy Street around 4.45PM when phones started ringing. And that was it. MTR had been clumbsily pulled off the air by upper management at 5PM.

    Turned out it was everyone’s last day.

    But at least we were in the right place for it. I never ended up paying, so thank you to who ever fixed the bill that night. I went back to the station around 7 o’clock to pick up my bag. Naturally the studio had been dead-bolted, my security pass deactivated and a security guard posted at the front door. Fortunately there was a nice chap at SEN who let me in. I took the opportunity to swipe some post-it notes.

    This happened at a particularly difficult time for me, as I’d just signed a lease on my own apartment two days earlier. Conveniently in the adjacent suburb to the MTR studios. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!?!

    I tried my luck at some other radio stations, though it turns out it’s not much easier to get panelling work even with experience. And in my case anyway, no one seemed particularly interested in paying for training. So the option was to go in and work for free for an indeterminate amount of time with no promise of a job at the end of it, while my rent goes unpaid, or give up and get a job stacking shelves in a supermarket like so many other out-of-work show biz types.

    Hence I was extremely lucky to land another local panelling gig at Crocmedia, working on AFL Live with the legendary sports broadcasters in Rex Hunt, Sandy Roberts and Peter Donegan. Certainly the best part of that whole venture was being the go-to sound effect guy for Rex Hunt. And panelling the Grand Final to 96 radio stations (flawlessly, I might add) is going to be a highlight of radio career that won’t soon be surpassed.

    So from March to April, I went from full time radio work to weekend radio work, with a little casual wedding DJ-ing in between. The DJ-ing lasted until I discovered I was being paid half of the travel allowance I was lead to believe. Is it too much to ask to be given a freaking break?

    Though less money was coming my way, I did have an abundance of time, which came in handy in the lead up to shooting the first season of my TV game show 31 Questions. This was why I moved to Melbourne, after all.

    Television.

    Without a doubt, it’s been the best experience of my life. My favourite part of the process was being in the studio, joking around with the cast, crew and contestants. When a gag I had written months earlier was finally delivered (not necessarily by me) and it actually WORKED, I can’t describe how rewarding the laughter was. It was such a thrill when anything on that show actually worked. Even the buzzers.

    And I’m so pleased with how far the show has come. It was always a distant goal to get it aired on all the community stations around Australia. And we did it. We even got approved by a TV station in New Zealand.

    The team and I now have our eyes set on a second season, which is due to start shooting in March 2013. There are still plenty of mistakes we made in season 1, which I’m relishing the opportunity to improve upon.

    Perhaps more interesting, what does it say about the general state of TV in Australia when someone would actually say that our crappy little game show is “the best show on television”?

    Obviously a pretty sad line up…

    I’ve also done quite a bit of freelance writing work this year, appearing in/on The Drum, Mamamia, The Punch, mX and Australian Popular Science Magazine.

    There were a handful of other little creative projects: a couple of podcasts, more Too Easy episodes, a screenplay, the odd bit of voice-over work, etc. I also spent seven weeks working at a digital advertising agency. It was a valuable experience in the sense I’ve added another occupation to the list of jobs I don’t want.

    In the year of our lord 2012, I also made my debut on ABC Radio National’s “The Science Show” with a 5 minute radio story about a Carl Sagan-inspired play at the Malthouse Theatre called “Pale Blue Dot”.

    Science has always been an interest of mine. Had comedy not been my chosen path, I reckon I’d have set my eyes on space.

    After 4 years of ABC job applications, I finally managed to get a few casual producing shifts at 774 ABC Melbourne, producing for “The Morning Program” with Jon Faine. I enjoyed working there and would definitely be interested in MORE SHIFTS… something to keep pursuing in 2013 😉

    In fact, the ABC has been the dream for a long time. It seems to be the the only place in radio or TV in Australia that really gives talent the opportunity to develop and create content that isn’t about Kim Kardashian.

    Though I only did 3 shifts at ABC 774 this year, I did meet Jill Meagher a few weeks before she died. She was the unit assistant, so she handled all the paperwork when I started. She was a lovely person and like everyone else, I was completely shocked and deeply saddened when she was found raped and murdered.

    Events like this, terrible as they are, give people a chance to step back and appreciate the important things in life. And I’ll tell you what, petty office politics isn’t one of them.

    Possibly the biggest lifestyle change I’ve experienced this year is a new found appreciation for tea. That’s all thanks to Van Badham, my close friend and mentor. She introduced me to Dilmah Rose and French Vanilla tea with vanilla soy milk. Sure, it’s more camp than a row of tents. But it’s absolutely sensational.

    Tea tastes considerably better when you have it in a proper teacup. As nice as it is to drink a hot beverage from a mug with my face on it, a traditional teacup holds less liquid, so the tea is more highly concentrated. And I think there’s something about the cone-esque shape of the cup that aerates the tea better, or some crap.

    Anyway, my parents have a bunch of old porcelain handed down through the generations just sitting in boxes at the family mansion. They haven’t been used in 50 years or something. So I’ve taken it upon myself to take them to Melbourne. What’s the point of having these fabulous antiques if you aren’t getting pleasure from using them?

    You only live once. These things are supposed to be enjoyed!

    So what’s the plan for 2013?

    Season 2 of “31 Questions” on Channel 31 and beyond. And some more paid work would be nice.

    I’d also like to invest in my own proper recording equipment so I can finally be free to create audio masterpieces without having to rely on other people or organisations.

    Anything else will be a bonus.

  • 31 Questions season finale for Adelaide and Perth this week

    Due to a mix up in Western Australia, Adelaide has somehow overtaken Perth and will be the first non-Melbourne city to to see the season finale of 31 Questions! How AMAZING is that!?!

    Episode 13 of the low budget TV game show all the critics are ignoring was supposed to air on WTV Perth last Saturday, but they made a last minute schedule change. Perth fans can now catch the last episode of season 1 THIS coming Saturday, 24 November 11.30PM (that’s digital channel 44). So scratch that in your fridge.

    Adelaide, on the other hand, can watch it first TONIGHT 10.30PM on 44 Adelaide. By gum, that’s only 90 minutes from now!

    Left this blog entry a little late…

    I was back in Adelaide a couple of weeks ago and did a bit of a radio station crawl. Just after midnight on Monday November 5, I stopped by FiveAA 1395AM to have a chat with Peter Godfrey. Technically, I was his lead guest for the week.

    We talked about 31 Questions (obviously), Adelaide versus Melbourne, community TV in general, and some other things that probably aren’t that important. Have a listen here:

    Incredibly, Peter Godfrey does that midnight to 6am shift all by himself. No panel operator. And no producer! He screens all the calls himself. Incredible. An absolute pro.

    At one point I left the studio to grab a glass of water and take another selfie photo of me in front of the sign and I actually got lost. That FiveAA office is a maze. Ing.

    Now for most media whores, that would be enough for the night, but not me. No sir. When it comes to radio, I just can’t quit.

    So I hopped in the car (Dad’s), and drove from Hindmarsh Square to fabulous 228 North Terrace for a pre-recorded interview with John Murch at Radio Adelaide 101.5FM. It was about 3AM by the time I left. Not sure when that interview will air. I guess just listen out for RadioNotes on a Sunday night.

    Oh, while I’m here, just one more thing. Back in 2007 I won an “Bilby” award for “Best Station ID” at the 2007 South Australian Community Broadcasting Association Awards. It was on display in the Radio Adelaide foyer when I was last there in 2009. But it ain’t there now!

    In fact, there’s a space where it should be. There’s awards from 1985 all the way up to 2006. Then the awards just jump to 2008!

    So if anyone’s seen it, I’d be very interested to know its current whereabouts. To my knowledge there was only one copy.

    And I couldn’t imagine there’d be any single past or present Radio Adelaide station volunteer who would want to see harm come to a physical representation of my talent…

    Ha, but seriously… I want that award back.
