  • Good Afternoon Adelaide

It’s mid September so figured it was about time I did my first post for the year. It’s been a busy one, with lots of legitimate writing work and a little schlepping keeping me from writing anything on here.

Any who, came across this funny old show on YouTube called “Good Afternoon Adelaide”. Take a gander:

Apparently an Adelaide-based TV chat show circa early 90s. To quote this article I found on the subject:

“…the one-hour chat show aired live across SA and into the silver city of Broken Hill weekdays at 2PM, during an era when Adelaide truly was the place to be (before Victoria stole the slogan for their number plates, along with the Formula One Grand Prix).

Good Morning Adelaide featured news, celebrity interviews, live music, talkback callers, lifestyle segments, paid advertorials and a who’s who of Adelaide royalty – with ratings success.

Eventually, the show became victim of increased networkisation from the eastern states and was cancelled in 1992. As a final insult, the station’s master tapes were later sold and used for episodes of Wheel of Fortune.”

    There’s a Facebook page too.

    Sure takes me back 😉

  • VHS Revue 8 – Wiseguy (1993)

It’s the 8th installment of VHS Revue! Wow 8 episodes. I reckon that’s enough to call it a proper webseries now.

This week I took a look through a circa 1993 tape of an episode of the late 80s/early 90s police drama “Wiseguy” – a show I’ve never heard of.

Highlights include ads for Brunnings lawn seed, Sizzler, Link Introductions, TyreMag (which I think might now be banned?), Bob Moran used cars (who is DEFINITELY now banned), Solver Paints, and another thing. Footage recorded from Channel Nine Adelaide and used here for review, parody and satirical purposes (obviously).

This is the last episode I’ve got in the can. But they’ve been fun to make and I’ve got a few more tapes with good stuff on them. So keep your lips peeled for number 9.

    Thanks for watching/liking/tweeting/subscribing/etc. It’s always a thrill.

Big thanks especially to Alexis Kotlowy for the fabulous theme music and opening title sequences. And Nicholas Godfrey for his VHS camera. Though I did spot it in Cash Converters for him, so really, it’s mostly me.

Keep track of VHS Revue on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

  • VHS Revue

    Merry New Year!

When I was in Adelaide the other week, I got together with my good friend Nick Godfrey to make a new direct-to-YouTube video recorded on the futuristic medium of VHS…

And after tedious conversion through about 4 other formats. it’s now online for your enjoyment. Presenting “VHS Revue”. A nostalgic look back on the 4:3 gems taped and abandoned on video cassette decades ago. In this edition, I look at a tape of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics:

Highlights include commercials for National, Ansett, South Australian potatoes & Peter Russell-Clarke endorsing cheese, as well as some John Newcombe presenting clips and an Eyewitness News update with a young Tim Webster.

You may have noticed that’s actually episode 2. I did make a similar video back in 2008 where I dissected some ads on a tape of the 1985 Australian Grand Prix, originally titled “Witty 80s TV Commercial Nerd”. I’ve re-branded that Star Wars-style as “VHS Revue 1”. Here’s that one, if you’re interested:

These are really fun to make. And there’s something quite relaxing about putting a tape into the VCR and hearing those reels wind around, not knowing what you’re going to find. I find my eyes that are so used to crystal clear HD reception adjust to the warm, fuzzy image on the screen after a while. I brought a box of old tapes back with me to Melbourne, so if I find anything good, I’ll be back for another VHS Revue.

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green
How about that blue shirt? Still fits!

  • 31 Questions Ep #10: Beautiful People’s Edition!

    MMMMMmmmmYYYYYEEEEESSSSS!

It’s the 10th episode of 31 Questions for your YouTube viewing pleasure. This one features a cameo appearance from host of Deal or No Deal Australia, TV’s Andrew O’Keefe.

And thanks to the marvelous editing of Anthony McCormack, you’ll hardly even notice the terrible audio issues we had while shooting that sketch, and which we didn’t notice until we got to the editing room.

Let this be a free lesson for the aspiring television-maker: It’s not enough to just monitor the audio levels on the camera’s little viewing screen. You have to actually be listening with HEADPHONES. Otherwise you won’t pick up weird clicky noises caused be faulty XLR cables and be forced to dub scenes with audio from different takes.

But hey, that’s the fun of TV…

Thanks again to AO’K for being such a good sport and allowing us to blow him up for the entertainment of others.

We’ve had quite a bit of feedback from viewers recently, which is FANTASTIC!

Here’s a fine post about us from Bother’s Bar on the other side of the planet, where he describes me as “Tim Vine-esque”. I’ll certainly take that!

Fun fact: During my 2010 interview with Tim Vine, we jointly came up with the “Typo Magazine’s Man of the Ear” gag, which I later used in Ep #6 of 31 Questions.

That’s one of my favourite lines. I originally came up with “Typo Magazine’s Man of the Beer”. But Tim Vine suggested “Ear”. A superior punchline. Or punch “word”, really. In my opinion, it should be a contender for “World’s most perfect joke”. Just six words long, but it’s all it needs to be.

Of course regardless of its comic perfection, when I delivered that line in Ep #6 the joke bombed.

    Makes ME laugh…

We also had a YouTube comment on Ep #10 from a guy called “jedimerchants”. It’s quite bizarre. This video response pretty much sums it up:

Thank you once again beautiful contestants!

Ep #11 arrives on your television screen (assuming you live in Melbourne or Geelong AND don’t live in an apartment building that automatically blocks out Channel 31… found that one out the hard way last weekend…) tomorrow (Saturday) evening 10PM on Digital 44.

See you then (from the TV).

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green
    I’m not crazy.

  • Warnie Calls a Brothel on The Magic Factory!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kt1-QaDuzww

    Ahoy!

Above is the first of many Shane Warne soundboard prank calls coming soon to the Internet!

Antonio Cafasso and I made them for our graveyard shift on SYN 90.7FM last Thursday, which we dubbed “The Magic Factory”.

As I gradually make my way through the 7 consecutive hours of radio we broadcast to Melbourne and beyond, I’ll eventually assemble a “best-of” podcast for you. Such a podcast will be considerably shorter than 7 hours, I can assure you.

Overall it was a fantastic experience. We both had a lot of fun. And we had listeners from as far away as Kansas City, Missouri tuning in! I’m looking at YOU Brad Westmar!

The period from 11:30PM to 3:30AM was probably the best. After that we ran out of pre-recorded stuff, as well as things to talk about, and we just got freaking tired. From memory I think the last couple of hours got a little weird.

But any who, check out the SYN 90.7FM Page on my website to listen back the sketches. There are a few up there already, and more are on the way.

Personally, I think David M. Green’s Songs to Have Sex to is my favourite. I truly am a terrible singer.

Many thanks to Antonio and everyone who listened and texted in. And thanks to Alan Jones and his bite-sized pieces of audio rage for hours of small hour amusement!

We had a few callers too but the SYN studio phone doesn’t ring and the tiny little red light wasn’t always in our line of sight, so I apologise if we didn’t pick up everytime.

This has certainly re-lit my spark for audio production. I think a return to the air waves on a more regular basis isn’t too far off.

And look out for more Warnie prank calls. They’re coming!

Subscribe to me on YouTube to be the first to know about them.

    Kind regards,
    Radio’s David M. Green
Jesus, can we get someone in here?
