  • 31 Questions Ep #05

Last Saturday I drove up to scenic Warranwood in Melbourne’s outer east to join my good friend Dean Watson in front of his humungous TV to watch episode #5 of 31 Questions.

His TV is literally like 8 of my TVs. My TV is very small.

    I also met his goat.

In the world of legitimate TV game shows, last week SBS announced that “Letters and Numbers” will not be returning. Instead it will be replaced by the British version of the show: “Countdown”.

This is a shame. But at the same time, it did make our parody segment “Letters and Letters” considerably more topical. Complete blind luck, considering we taped the episode back in April. That question about The Wiggles didn’t date quite as well, however.

And spoiler alert, congratulations to Naomi, this week’s glorious champion! You can read her first hand account of her time on 31 Questions on her blog. Fascinating stuff, which I had no idea of at the time we taped the show.

I’m very pleased with how 31 Questions has been received so far. Thank you for all the kind tweets and Facebook page comments. The response has literally been nothing but positive.

By the way, I don’t believe I’ve shared the link to our fabulous review from Australian Tumbleweeds: “Australia’s most opinionated blog about comedy”. I don’t know who that guy is, but he’s an exceptionally harsh critic. Basically, if it doesn’t have Shaun Micallef or Tony Martin in it, he hates it. So to have such a positive review is quite the honour.

He actually reviewed our pilot episode, which in my opinion is probably the worst one. And to be honest, I reckon episode #5 is the second worst. But I can now say every episode from now on is a good one.

In other news, I’m managing to white-ant my into other RMITV shows:

Next stop, a little bit o’ good ole fashioned PR.

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green
You know, if you remove the “e” and “l” from “Public relations”, you’re left with “Pubic rations”.

  • 31 Questions Ep #04 with TV’s Pete Smith!

    Best ep yet.

But of course, I would say that wouldn’t I?

Thanks for the Twitter love, folks!

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green
    Pete Smith = Pure class.

  • 31 Questions starts 9 June 2012 on Channel 31 Melbourne & Geelong!

I’m not quite sure how we did it, but somehow… we shot 12 episodes of 31 Questions in just six days. Not consecutively, obviously. Whoa! Don’t get me wrong!

We spread those studio dates out over six weeks…

Oh sure, that’s pretty poor by commercial TV standards. They shoot something like five “Deal or No Deals” a day. But for community TV, that is pretty spectacular.

And it’s all thanks to that great bunch of people in the photo above. We were blessed with a fantastic crew who came in week after week to work for nothing more than a sandwich and a slice of pizza.

What an incredible experience. If they had these sorts of facilities in Adelaide, I would have done a TV show years ago. But instead, I had to move to Melbourne to make this happen. But hey, can’t complain 😉

It’s given me the opportunity to work with some exceptionally talented people…

And I’ve made some new friends along the way…

The actual taping of the last two shows on May 17 went off mostly without a hitch. Oh, don’t get me wrong. There was a hitch.

During the final round of the final show, the tape malfunctioned and stopped recording. It also caused the back-up recorder to stop as well. So we lost the last segment and annoyingly had to re-shoot it.

So that being the case, you may notice a few in-jokes about deja vu towards the end of episode 13.

But these things happen. We’re lucky the guys and girls in the control room noticed it early and we didn’t lose more footage. And luckily for us, that was the only time that happened to us on the whole series.

That fear was always at the back of my mind. I could just imagine shooting two episodes back to back, only to then discover none of it had been recorded. It’s every TV-maker’s worst nightmare.

But thankfully that didn’t happen and it’s now all “in the can”, or more accurately, that little plastic case the DV tapes come in.

And before I forget, a BIG THANK YOU to the many people who made up our studio audience. Our last two nights in the studio had our biggest audiences to date. And it really made the whole experience so much better.

Fortunately also, we were able to record the important second half of the Gerard Kotlowy cardboard cutout gag. See previous blog entry.

I think cardboard cutouts are up there with boats and golf in terms of hilarious concepts. We had a lot of fun with that cardboard cutout:

Actually that video pretty much sums up the show. A few people goofing around while others freak out.

As for 2D Gerard… he seems to be developing a mind of his own…

He’s now taken his rightful place on permanent display in my apartment. I’ve set him up just inside the entrance.

The first time I arrived home after setting this up, I forgot “Cardboard Gerard” was there and upon opening the door I experienced one second of absolute terror as for some reason there was a suited screaming man in my home. I suspected that would happen. Hilarious.

However, I’m less certain how to explain this… When I arrived home the NEXT night, it was almost as if Cardboard Gerard was expecting me…

An additional side effect I’m now faced with is the prospect of finding places in my apartment for all the other props and tidbits we used on 31 Questions.

    A prospect I’m very much enjoying…

So we now move on to the NEXT stage of television… the editing.

    This may take a while.

In the mean time, I’m proud to announce OUR TIMESLOT!

Episodes of 31 Questions will be broadcast for the first time Saturdays 10PM on Channel 31 Melbourne & Geelong – starting 9 June – and repeated Fridays 1.30AM from 15 June.

It’s not exactly the timeslot we were expecting, but hey, we’ll take it!

I’ve done radio shows in worse timeslots. Who could forget 2007’s “Brain Damage” on Radio Adelaide 101.5FM, Wednesday nights midnight to 1AM, hilariously wedged between “The Albanian Program” and five hours of the BBC World Service?

    Everyone, that’s who.

If you’re outside of Melbourne and Geelong, sit tight. We’re looking at other community TV stations around Australia. And there’s YouTube as well. So there’ll be no excuses for not watching 😉

Unless of course, you’re a blind person.

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green
    Livin’ the dream.

  • *Ding* Time to turn the page…

Welcome to the next chapter in the DMG saga.

It’s been some time since my last blog entry. My apologies if I’ve neglected the few souls who come here semi-regularly, hoping to discover some new David M. Green bloggy goodness.

I suppose I can immediately blame Optus. I moved into this new apartment in Hawthorn on March 10. I was supposed to have Internet installed on March 23. It’s now April 6 and I’m still waiting for my wi-fi modem.

Thank God for the “hotspot” function on my iPhone and the idiot in the neighbourhood with the unsecured wireless network, or I’d be living like it’s 1996.

Hopefully I’ll properly merge onto the on-ramp to the Information Superhighway soon enough, and join the rest of you.

I’m settling into my new place nicely. The kitchen is just about set up. I had to buy a fridge, a microwave, cutlery, crockery, cookware, the works.

I even needed to buy a bench from IKEA, as there’s not enough built-in bench space…

One Paul Simon’s “Graceland” and half of Gary Numan’s “Beserker” later…

Tada! Gotta hand it to those Swedes. They know kitchen solutions.

The lounge room/main room still needs some work. A couch is on its way from my lovely parents’ house in Adelaide. Then when I can muster the cash, I’ll get a coffee table and a bigger TV.

Speaking of cash, I recently signed up with DJ Masters as a casual DJ. Thus far I’ve DJ-ed two weddings. One in Metung, near Lakes Entrance in eastern Victoria. The other in Shepparton, a couple of hours north of Melbourne.

If you stalk me on Twitter you can follow my progress wearing suits and spinning tracks all over the state.

Want David M. Green to DJ your next rhythmic social gathering for some reason? Go to the DJ Masters website. Ask for me by name. Or a vague description.

I’ve also got a very promising new radio-related job in the pipeline. But more on that one soon.

And then there’s 31 Questions. My big project for 2012.

In a way, it’s been a blessing I lost the MTR job, because I have no idea how the hell I’d be able to produce, write and host this TV show if I was also working 40 hours a week.

I’ve got most of the 13-episode season now written and it’s coming together nicely. We’ve already shot some pre-tape stuff, including this:

And last night we had our first studio day. A very brief rehearsal and a chance to shoot some of the opening sketches.

Not surprisingly, we were plagued by problems. The hallmark of community television.

The most annoying hindrance was the absence of a large piece of our set, which we had constructed for our 2nd pilot in June 2011. It had simply disappeared from the store room!

In hindsight, we probably should have checked last week everything was in order. But Jesus! It’s a huge object. No idea where it’s got to. It’s either been misplaced god knows where, stolen, or broken up and used for firewood.

We were extremely fortunate to make a similar-looking replacement out of pieces of other sets. You can hardly tell the difference, right?

In the 2nd pilot, we had 2 plasma TVs on set. But we arrived yesterday to discover one of them was broken.

Fortunately I had a large poster of myself; an item I can stare at just as long, if not longer, than a flat screen television. An adequate replacement, no?

There were some other technical issues as well. Something was wrong with the lighting desk, which meant we only had time to record three of the seven sketches I had planned.

Hats off to our fantastic crew. Despite the setbacks, we all kept on and no one lost their cool.

We’ve still got the next six Thursdays in the studio so hopefully we’ll squeeze the rest in.

And I’m very happy with the new cast.

There’s myself of course (but you know that).

Taking over from Alasdair “Al” Tremblay-Birchall  is the fabulous Anthony McCormack (from The Good Show and many other things). We all loved Al but he has conflicting Melbourne Comedy Festival commitments.

And it gives me great pleasure to introduce Sophie Loughran as our new 31 Questions scorekeeper. You’re gonna love her!

From our rehearsals, we gel together like some sort of razzle dazzle entertainment ooze. And I’m really looking forward to working with the two of them more over the next 6 weeks. I think we got something here.

Also, I got to wear a dress:

Disturbingly, I stayed in that dress just a bit too long after shooting the relevant sketch. I enjoyed it considerably more than I was expecting…

I don’t actually mind wearing lip stick and make-up, but here’s a fun fact for you: I absolutely hate face paint. Ever since I was 4. That one occasion at kindergarten in 1991 was the one and only time I ever had my face painted. From memory, it was some form of rainbow. Just didn’t care for it.

But back to the present. Remember, we’ll need contestants on the show too. Plus there’s plenty (every) of seats available in our studio audiences. So sign up to RMITV and keep an eye on the 31 Questions Facebook and Twitter pages for updates.

So big times ahead for the next six weeks. I’ve got a television series to make. And I have to scrape enough money together to pay for it, plus pay my considerably higher rent, and a cavalcade of bills and renewals… which always seem to come all at once, don’t they?

Car registration, servicing, RACV membership, Internet, ambulance cover. All these bills and more! Christ!

But then again, I could die tomorrow, and I’d still be in surplus.

So life ain’t so bad, really.

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green
