  • THE Big Show: It’s Freaking Hilarious!

    Hey!

I went into Triple M Adelaide yesterday to sit in with Sam (our extremely dedicated producer) while he put the finishing touches on all our sketches and segments for THE Big Show. Poor Sam. He’d just got back from his European holiday the day before (no doubt to escape the huge workload thrust upon him by the Triple M production department) and he had been at Triple M catching up on the backlog of work since 5am! I got there at noon and I was supposed to spend an hour with him going over the show. I ended up staying for 3 and a half hours. Laughter was abundant.

I gotta say, it sounds fantastic! Kudos to Sam and Miles in production and Tim Lordan, the assistant programme director for their time and advice and excellent work in bringing our ideas to life. Until now, we were all thinking “well, we’ll give it our best shot and hopefully it’ll be good” but now that I’ve heard how it all sounds it’s “Oh my God! It worked! It’s great! This is amazing!” But hey, I don’t want to over-sell it… You can decide for yourself. Tune in this Sunday August 30th 2009 at 10pm on Triple M in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide or online. It’s Semi-Pro Radio. This week it’s  THE Big Show with David M. Green, Matty B, Tim Wray, Nick Godfrey & Adam Navarro and I can honestly say it’s some of our finest and funniest work to date. And we had a damn good time doing it!

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green
Look out for the Larry the Lawnmower sketch…

  • THE Big Show! That’s… 3 Ms

    He-he-hey!

What’s up? No time to wait for you to answer. Get a load of this…

You can hear the audio fruits of last week’s recording day in the form of “THE Big Show” on the tree that is the Triple M network in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide this Sunday August 30 10pm-midnight as part of Semi-Pro Radio! We reveal some ridiculous movie trailers, weird stores and what some people have carelessly left lying around Triple M. Plus Nick’s tips on avoiding Swine Flu, a trip down That’s Sexist lane, prank calls with a Smiddy soundboard, lawnmowers coming out the back-lot and some other junk we managed to throw together at the last minute before we were shown the door!  THE Big Show! It’s funny (51% new material).

It really has been a fantastic experience. If nothing else it’s been an excuse to catch up with Matty B again, whom I haven’t seen since he last left Adelaide to return to Sydney about 18 months ago. He came over for 2 weeks and the whole team (Matty B, Nick, Adam, Tim & myself) all met every couple of days to discuss, write, plan, analyse, nit-pick and then record the show (in between just hanging out and wasting time). In a way it would have been easier if we were doing 20 shows, but because we’re only doing it once, the pressure’s on to make it the best…

There’s still some finishing touches to make before it all goes to air in a week’s time. I’ll post more soon.

    Kind regards,
    David MMM. Green

  • So it comes to this… A COMEDY SHOW ON TRIPLE M!

    Hey Hey!

Okay, let’s get straight to it. Now that it’s been posted on the Triple M website, I can now reveal to YOU that Matty B, Nick Godfrey, Tim Wray, Adam Navarro and myself will be putting together a once off 2-hour comedy show that will go to air on the Triple M radio network on a Sunday night! WOW!

    THE Big Show Team Photo

But how did we manage to scam our way into this? Good question. For reasons unknown, Triple M and some advertising people came up with the idea for this contest called “Semi-Pro Radio.” It’s a contest open only to people who work for the advertising or “creative” industry. I entered as an employee of “Allan Miller’s FAST Voice-overs” (technically they count… pretty clever huh?). Entrants put together a show proposal. A number of finalists are selected (13) and those finalists, one of them being us with our show: “THE Big Show,” get to fill 2 hours of air time on Triple M. Then after all shows go to air a winner is selected, yada yada yada something about fabulous prizes… You can read all the details here.

But anyway… WE GET TO MAKE A COMEDY SHOW FOR TRIPLE M! This is a dream come true for me personally. Triple M’s “Get This” (from the comic genius of Tony Martin, Ed Kavalee & Richard Marsland) is still, and will probably always be, my favourite, and the GREATEST radio show of all time. I realise that there’s no way I could ever do a show as good as Get This. However, that’s what we’re gonna aim for. Hey, it’s a once off appearance. We might as well make it the absolute best, funniest, greatest 2 hours of radio we can. I don’t care if we don’t win. I just want to do a good show so afterwards I can say “yeah… that was pretty funny.” Plus I’ll get to reunite with Matty B, whom I rarely see these days as he lives in Sydney. It’s THE Big Show. Be on THE look out for it and of course, when I know more (like, WHEN it will air) I’ll put the info up here.

On a personal note, tomorrow will mark one year to the day since I met and had lunch with Richard Marsland (of Get This fame… obviously). I don’t think I would be doing this show on Triple M if it had not been for the advice and assistance he gave me. I owe him a lot and I really wish he was still here to see this.

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green

  • RIP Richard Marsland

    Hello,

I was extremely shocked and saddened today to hear that comedy writer and radio personality Richard Marsland died yesterday at the under-ripe age of 32. This tragedy has touched me personally because of our shared comedy ideals, and also because he was an acquaintance of mine. I would like to say friend, but I don’t think I knew him well enough. Although you don’t have to know him well to know he’s one of the nicest guys in radio. He was also VERY FUNNY and in my opinion, “Get This” with Tony Martin, Ed Kavalee & Richard Marsland on the buttons is the funniest radio show of all time. Having to pull the car over to the side of the road due to uncontrollable laughter was a regular occurrence. I actually had the good fortune to interview Richard once for my community radio show I was hosting at the time. It took place December 29th 2007, just over a month after “Get This” was axed. You can hear that interview here.

That interview was only the beginning of a short but serendipitous relationship I had with Richard. Around the time of our interview, I got a call from SAFM/Today Network Program Director Craig Bruce. Eventually he got me a job as a panel-operator at SAFM, a job which Richard had had about 10 years earlier. When I went to Melbourne in July this year for a short holiday with my girlfriend Jemima, Richard was nice enough to agree to meet me, and he bought lunch for me and Jemima at one of those Melbourne alley cafes (that’s where the photo of me giving him that shirt comes from). We talked for about 2 hours about all sorts of stuff; radio, comedy, writing, TV, old sketches from Get This. Eventually Jemima left out of boredom. I’m very lucky to have had such an experience and I can tell you it is one of the greatest things in the world, to go up to someone you admire and tell them you love their work. I’m glad for the opportunity, but still sad that he’s gone. My thoughts are with his friends, family and everyone he touched with his humour over his short but brilliant life.

    Panel in peace Rich.

EDIT – On December 12th we dedicated the second episode of our Radio Adelaide comedy show ‘On The Yacht’ to his memory. I broke character to read a short tribute just before the show, which can be heard here.

    Yours sincerely,
    David M. Green

  • David M. Green Does Melbourne, Richard Marsland (not sexually)

    Hello man/woman/child,

I’ve just been in Melbourne the last 4 days with my lovely girlfriend Jemima. Had a fantastic time! Trams! Oh the trams! Did I mention I’m an avid proponent of light rail infrastructure?

We saw, amongst other things, the zoo, where we observed a couple of horny shrews chasing each other… well, one horny shrew really, chasing a shrew that didn’t appear quite as horny. Who knows though? She could be playing hard to get… or “he”… his/her choice and a valid one… the animal kingdom can be a harsh mistress… or male… Also, I was attacked by butterflies, as can be seen in the photos below. Note my frightened appearance…

We also saw the “Game On” video game exhibit in Federation Square, which was amazing; a ‘Video Game Museum!’ It was kinda strange to see a Nintendo 64 behind glass though. There were consoles I’d never even heard of before, like all these weird ones from the ’70s. Plus they had original playable arcade games! Missile Command, Space Invaders, PacMan, Frogger, Donkey Kong, Berzerk. Fantastic! See photos below…

    (Photography was prohibited)

But by far the highlight of the trip was catching up with panel-operator heavy-weight Richard Marsland (of “Get This” fame, currently on Melbourne’s Triple M Breakfast show with Peter Helliar & Myf Warhurst) in a Bourke Street cafe. I gave him a shirt specially labelled for the occasion (see photo at top of this entry). I am, afterall, currently working as a panel operator at SAFM, the very position once held by the man himself.

I can definitely see myself living in Melbourne eventually, especially if I want to continue doing comedy on radio (and TV). Melbourne’s just like Adelaide really… just with it’s act together.

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green
