  • Hey kids, get a job like me!

At the risk of exposing myself to green screen-related graphical editing tomfoolery… allow me to fill you in on my recent fantastic experience as a professional writer and presenter for Video Educational Australasia.

A few months ago, I auditioned at VEA as a presenter. I happen to casually mention I was also a writer. I didn’t think much of it, until several weeks later when I was offered a gig as a writer for an educational video they were making, ironically called “How will this help me get a job?” And of course I jumped on the idea.

The video is aimed at high school students and discusses several skills employers look for when they’re hiring people. I had to write several scenes demonstrating those skills, eg. communication, team work, etc. And best of all, I could be funny! So I had a great time coming up with scenes (sketches, if you will) emphasising the importance of each skill.

VEA cast three young actors to play three young people on the verge of entering the workforce. The talented Lisa Marie Shaw, Aldi Godjali and Rhys Thomas. I also wrote in a role for a presenter, which I was lucky enough to land myself.

    Here we all are:

The video was shot in a day and a half. One full day for the three actors to film the scenes, and one half day for myself to film the intros and summaries for each chapter of the 20 minute video.

I stopped by VEA’s Fitzroy studio on Tuesday to experience the novelty of complete strangers reading lines I wrote and acting out scenes I created…

In case you’re colour blind, the whole thing was shot in front of a green screen. Backgrounds will be added later digitally (as it’s cheaper that filming on a real tropical island!).

Coincidentally, I happened to know the boom operator, Elliott Klein. We both worked on the pilot for Channel 31’s “Late Night Tonight” with TV’s Michael Lanzer.

Industry contacts: one of the best things, if not THE best thing, about becoming a member of RMITV student television.

This was another special moment for me, as it was the first time I’d held a boom…

    Hehehe… booms are great!

Hey, remember my advice earlier this year borne from one of my uglier experiences in student television? Well let me remind you… if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, get in with the crew! It makes for a much better working atmosphere:

Someone feel free to add a beach background for that photo. Or a volcano or something. That’d be pretty cool…

So that about wrapped it up for Day 1. Unfortunately due to another VEA production, the camera was due somewhere else by 10am Wednesday. So we all got to the studio at 6AM in order to get my presenting parts recorded. 6AM!?! Jeeze…

I can’t seem to get to bed early, even if I know I have to be up before dawn. So I finally managed to get to sleep around my usual time of 1:30am. I was on three and a half hours sleep for this.

Also, they didn’t have a teleprompter for me, so I had to memorise these quite wordy spiels. And some of what I originally wrote had been altered by VEA’s advisers to ensure the educational elements were on message. This was a challenge, but by God it was fun!

Most of my presentation pieces were filmed at and around “my” desk. I’m sort of an arrogant boss-type character, laying down the employment wisdom on the young folk.

Unlike when I was a sports correspondent on Channel 31’s “Newsline”, on this occasion my wandering eye brows were permitted, even encouraged, by director Bryce McNamara!

We wrapped by about 10:45am. I went home and crashed on my bed. I fell asleep in my suit (I even still had my shoes on).

At about 5pm I woke up and got ready for my weekly quiz night down at The Peacock Hotel in Northcote. After that nap, I was surprisingly refreshed. Turned out to be a good night too.

All up, a fantastic day of working in show biz!

So look out on the VEA website for “How will this help me get a job?” Funnily enough, with the project done, I’m back to looking for work…

I’d recommend you purchase a copy. You might find a few subtle David M. Green-related references buried in the script…

Special thanks to Anoar Ahmed for giving me this incredible opportunity. And thanks to Bryce and the rest of the cast and crew. It was truly a pleasure to work with you all.

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green
I still can’t believe I was paid to do that!

  • Internet Television? The Future is NOW!

    Ahoy,

Until recently, I was just like you; I thought that Internet TV was something that only existed one time in my mind when I thought up the concept myself a few years ago. Foolishly I did nothing about it and turns out someone else invented it. Not only that, but Australia’s first Internet TV station, Australia Live TV, is based right here (where I am, at least) in Adelaide, a mere 17.8km (via road) from my house!

After perusing Australia Live TV’s extensive list of 5 shows (4 of them sports-related), I was just about to close the web page forever, when I noticed that they’re launching their new morning show, to be called “Mornings Live.” Furthermore, they need a couple of hosts. Hey hey! Now it’s personal. And seeing as though applying for the position required little effort on my part, I figured I gotta get in on this, so I threw this demo video together in an afternoon…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJsmw6IAceo

I certainly enjoyed myself. In all seriousness, I’d love to do it. but if it doesn’t go beyond the demo-filming stage, hey that’s okay. I’ve also enjoyed watching the other entrants (Check those out here). There are about 5 with which I have been legitimately impressed. I must say, SOME of them are absolutely shocking… I’d love to put together a 30-minute TV special where I critique all the entries. But I don’t have the resources for that, so I’ll just do it here: For starters, about half of them either didn’t read the guidelines, or completely ignored them, as the demo video was supposed to be no longer than 60 seconds. Granted, my own is 69 seconds, but if you only watch the first 60 seconds, I was essentially through. But other entries range from 20 seconds to 10 minutes long! And most seem to be around the 2-4 minute range!

Furthermore, some of them are not directed to the specific position. Okay, fair enough, a few people have just put up a generic showreel. No harm in that. However, some have gone further (or shorter, rather), actually using their demo video for a completely unrelated talent search conducted earlier this year by the new ABC3 digital children’s channel. Hence several demo videos on the Mornings Live website feature hopeful presenters pouring their hearts out about wanting to work with children on the ABC! I myself also applied for that (and actually re-used part of my ABC demo for this one!), but I was clever enough to sneakily splice in new footage, which explains why my hair subtle changes length throughout the video, hehehe!

Another trend I noticed: Of the 90 or so video entries submitted so far, the most popular choice of background music seems to be “Clocks” by Coldplay. I can’t help but notice I was the only one to include both “Conditioning” by Howard Jones (stereotypical hilarious ’80s music) AND “Menuet From String Quintet No. 5 Op 13” by Luigi Boccherini (stereotypical hilarious “rich guy” music).

Lastly, I’d love to share just a few specific entries with you (who ever YOU are…). Please don’t get me wrong. This is not a mean-sprited dig at others’ expense, but merely me pointing out a few entrants’ “interesting choices” with regard to making their demo. Behold…

    1. Helen Ahrens: Shot with camera at 90 degrees.

    2. Peter something: Firstly, very low volume. Second… uh… what?

    3. Sarah Lawrence: Filmed considerably close to a busy road.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arbDNbG-MOI&feature=channel_page

    4. Fatimah Abbouchi: Used the Ten news theme (with Ten news voice-over).

    5. Jason Kemp: Evidentally a keen user of Movavi Video Converter’s fabulous trial version. Also, which one is Jason Kemp?

But of course, for maximum enjoyment, I highly recommend you watch EVERY entry. Thanks to guidelines not followed, what should be 90 minutes of entertainment, is more like 200 minutes of entertainment. And darn good watching!

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green
    What’s next? Internet books?

PS. Oh yes, by the way, if you like, feel free to vote for me on the Mornings Live website. I’d very much appreciate it and be happy to email you a signed photograph of something.

  • Video Game Doctor Sketch

Hey folk… well, here it is:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idsuZXwTRm4

And there is was (above). My latest straight-to-YouTube sketch visualisation; the so-called “Video Game Doctor Sketch,” in which Mario, played by Nick Godfrey, goes to see Dr Eggman Robotnik MD (me) and discovers that a quarter of a century of his hectic “super” lifestyle has finally caught up with him… Did you pick all the Nintendo and Sega references?

Special thanks must go to Chandlers Hill Surgery in Happy Valley, for allowing us to film there and to use all their medical equipment (the x-ray monitor, stethoscope, the prescription drugs to keep us alert and focused). I also must apologise for the aspect ratio. I do have a full 16:9 widescreen version, but I for the life of me couldn’t take advantage of the new “widescreen” YouTube because it kept stretching it out of shape, so I hope the letterboxed version doesn’t throw too many die-hard Nintendo fans into a rage of nerd obscenities…

I must say I love making these sketches. It’s always a really fun afternoon of filming and evening of editing, plus it lets me live up to my status of self-proclaimed “sketch comedian.” So thanks again to Nick Godfrey, Matthew “Smiddy” Smith, Voice-Over’s Tim Wray and Lizzie for using her genuine receptionist skills on camera, and also for taking these photos:

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green

  • Bas Rutten directing traffic now?

    Hey there friendly user,

What’s up? Don’t bother responding, I won’t be able to hear you… Oh wait, you could leave a comment… Sorry, I keep forgetting people can do that, as so few people do. So why not show those losers up by posting a comment? Or don’t, whatever… I’m just trying to be friendly here… Oh great now I’ve lost my train of thought. Hey don’t make that face at me!

Anyway, have I got an interesting tidbit of fact for you… Ok, as religious listeners of my comedy show “Pow-Wow” on Radio Adelaide 101.5FM would know, on the show we recently did some prank calls using a soundboard of famed Dutch street-fighting sensation Bas Rutten. Without sounding arrogant (oh who am I kidding?) they were HILARIOUS! I do believe it’s the funniest thing I’ve done, and probably will ever do. So I guess I should get out of the comedy game while I’m still on top… ahhhhh I’ll take my chances… Anyway, I turned the 16-minute radio segment into a YouTube clip by adding some images for comic effect. You can see “Bas Rutten Calling” Parts 1 & 2 on the Video Page of this website. I thought this was going to be the next Chris Crocker “Leave Britney Alone” Internet phenomenon… But it didn’t get that many views (At this stage they’ve been up for a few weeks and only a couple of hundred views… pretty lousy). So my good friend Nick Godfrey suggested just uploading one of the prank calls, instead of all 6, reasoning that your average YouTuber only has a 30 second attention span. SO… I employed some of my knowledge gained in my 3 years of studying psychology at a university level and chose to upload the call that I believed would gain the most attention… the one where we called a hooker… because, let’s face it… sex sells… which is also why this time I gave it the title “Bas Rutten Soundboard Prank Call Hooker,” and here it is:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OetgbVrm8yw

Now, you’ll notice I also chose a display image of a sexy woman speaking on the phone (sex sells). And what do you know? Within 19 hours it was ranked #10 most viewed video on YouTube Australia in the category of ‘Comedy’ for February 5th 2008!

Now, this has also had some additional flow-on effects… For some reason, an Italian porn site decided to embed my video on their website. Now, as I included my website URL on one of the images in the video, there have been a recent spike in the number of (I assume horny) Internet users from Italy and nearby European nations (as well as The Netherlands – home of Bas Rutten), visiting davidmgreen.com. According to my statistics below I’ve had more views from those countries than my own native Australia!

The moral of this story: Behold the powerful result of an Adelaide night where Bas Rutten, sex and comedy combined with the Internet!

Stay tuned to davidmgreen.com (if that’s even technically possible) for more David M. Green-style comedy… well that’s convenient isn’t it…

    Kind regards,
