  • A Melbourne winter

    Ahoy!

Ah yes, winter in Melbourne; A time for regular umbrella locomotion and excessive electric bills. Also time for one Coburg furniture store to throw another redundant sale:

One wonders what “conditions” would require the customer to pay MORE than full price…

But anywho, it’s been a productive winter in Melbourne for David M. Green. I’m past the half way point on my path to becoming a fully qualified journalist. Gaining more and more experience in radio, TV and life in general. I also bought some new underpants. I usually procrastinate when it comes to buying clothes, like all men, no doubt. But it really was becoming an embarrassment…

My boxers were literally tearing apart at the seams. So I had to replace them with some new ones. Shame. I had some good times in those underpants… But like any relationship, eventually one party outgrows the other and turns them into a polishing rag for shoes or dust-prone surfaces.

    Major things to report…

My sister Hannah came to visit a couple of weeks ago, which was very nice. Gave me a chance to see some touristy things I’d been putting off, like going up the Eureka Tower and visiting the Titanic exhibit at Melbourne Museum. Fascinating. We had a quick look at the National Gallery of Victoria as well. I’ve been in Melbourne long enough for it to feel like home now. That mysteriousness it had when I first arrived in February has long since gone. So it was interesting to see it from an outsider’s eyes again. It’s a wonderful city.

I also gained an entire university life’s worth of wacky experiences last month when I participated in the RMIT Student Union Annual Scavanger Hunt with four of my fellow post grad journalism buddies. It was like Revenge of the Nerds or that episode of The Simpsons where Homer goes to college (“Homer Goes to College”). A few things we may or may not have actually done (I’ll keep it ambiguous to protect the reputation of the educational institution): Swam in the fountain in front of the Royal Exhibition Building, busked in Swanston Street singing “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, leap-frogged down Bowen Street, streaked through the Melbourne University Union Building, crammed all of us into a public toilet stall at the Brunswick Hotel, plus much more… Those wacky students…

Something I will reveal I did was sing to Madonna appallingly at a karaoke bar. Listen to this for a bootleg recording…

Click to hear DMG’s Madonna Karaoke

Here are some happy snaps from that surreal and utterly exhausting 24 hours…

There’s some other footage floating around out there. I’m sure that will surface at some point in the future…

Oh yeah,by the way. We won! $100 each. Not bad for 24 hours’ work. That’s… $4 an hour… hmm… Experience. It was the experience… yeah…

In other news I’m writing and recording a lot. Keep checking here on my blog, and the SYN page, as I’m posting stuff up all the time.

I also finally hopped on the Twitter bandwagon. I’m David_M_Green. Feel free to follow me, if you’re into that crap.

So yes, everything else is good. Nothing major to complain about. Loving my time here in Melbourne! If you pretend Lachlan is the City of Melbourne, this pretty much sums up how I feel:

    Ah you crazy kids.

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green
    New underpants. Feelin’ good.

  • TANGS Ep 1-1: Where’s my ice cream?

    The All New Garage Show

    Starring
    Gerald Field-Mann & Kevin Callahan

    Episode 1 – 1: Where’s my ice cream?

    Gerald eyes Kevin’s icecream.

Another pointless project by David M. Green & Lachlan Cowlishaw

    Hello!

David M. Green here (obviously). Thanks to everyone who’s distributing kudos in both Lachlan’s and my respected direction with regard to our latest no-budget audio visual garage-themed venture: The All New Garage Show (I feel there should be an exclamation mark after “Show”. Oh well, I’ve established there isn’t one now, so I guess I’ll have to run with it. Or without it, rather).

The overwhelming concensus seems to be that Lachlan and I have a remarkable on-screen chemistry. I agree. Certainly I can think of no one else whom I share such a comic interrelationship. Watching it back, I think to myself, “you cannot artificially create that back and fourth effect.” I don’t think we could even write it. It just comes naturally. Also, with a script, that just creates opportunities to make mistakes. We’re just making it up as we go along. But enough of this wanky self-indulgent analysis!

A bunch of these little segments are edited and are trickling online at Lachlan’s discretion. I’ll be posting some more here this week. So won’t you please enjoy TANGS(!).

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green
Milky treat. It was time to eat it.

  • Two suits, two cameras and a garage

    Hello there!

This was an odd spur of the moment project championed by fellow RMIT journalism student, TV’s Lachlan Cowlishaw: “Hey, let’s set up a talk show set in my garage and just goof around!” I agreed on one condition: that we’d include cameras in that equation. A sensible decision.

So that’s the gist of it. Lachlan dressed his garage with a sheet, a couple of deck chairs and a set of bed-side table drawers as a desk. And last Wednesday I caught the 207 bus out to Doncaster in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, wearing my only suit. I arrived at Lachlan’s house, we spent maybe 15 minutes jotting down some ideas. Came up with the name of the show and character names on the day, set the cameras rolling and just ad-libbed for an hour.

I play host Gerald Field-Mann, a failed has-been TV personality, which in all respects is essentially who I am anyway. Lachlan plays Kevin Callahan: producer, sidekick and garage owner. We also take turns playing other guest characters too.

Probably the most basic TV show set-up in history. No crew. No lighting. No white balance. No camera operators. No script. Just the two of us making it up as we go along. It was a lot of fun and I think you can see that coming through when you watch the clips.

We’ve uploaded the first clip to a new YouTube account. Feel free to subscribe.

Lachlan is handling the editing, and more segments will be going online soon. This really was his idea. I’m just along for the ride. Although, this may end up being our “Televisionman” project. Organising to make a REAL television show is pretty tedious. At least this way we’re in control and can do whatever we want.

So please enjoy the first of many TANGS segments: What’s ticking off Matthew Newton?

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green
Is bad comedy the new good comedy?

  • Julia Gillard soundboard prank calls!

    Hello!

With only two days until the federal election, I thought I’d give Prime Minister Julia Gillard a helping hand by impersonating her electronically and calling some “Working Australians”…

And here’s the entire prank call segment from this morning’s Get Cereal breakfast show on Melbourne’s SYN 90.7FM:

    Here’s just the audio:

    Julia Gillard Soundboard Prank Calls!

It’s been quite a busy couple of weeks getting this stunt off the ground. Thanks to producer Tim Cuthell for begging me to do some more prank calls and getting the ball rolling. Thank you to the team at SYN for supporting my idea and getting the tech guy to come in last week to alter the control panel in the production studio that allowed me to actually make these calls. And thanks to Charles and Luke from Get Cereal. It was a real pleasure this morning. The most fun I’ve had on radio in quite some time.

My guest appearance is now a regular thing. Tune in every Thursday 8:30am to hear me goofing around and paying my dues with David M. Green’s Community Service! Or go here to listen to past material.

    Kind regards,
