  • THE Big Show: It’s Freaking Hilarious!

    Hey!

I went into Triple M Adelaide yesterday to sit in with Sam (our extremely dedicated producer) while he put the finishing touches on all our sketches and segments for THE Big Show. Poor Sam. He’d just got back from his European holiday the day before (no doubt to escape the huge workload thrust upon him by the Triple M production department) and he had been at Triple M catching up on the backlog of work since 5am! I got there at noon and I was supposed to spend an hour with him going over the show. I ended up staying for 3 and a half hours. Laughter was abundant.

I gotta say, it sounds fantastic! Kudos to Sam and Miles in production and Tim Lordan, the assistant programme director for their time and advice and excellent work in bringing our ideas to life. Until now, we were all thinking “well, we’ll give it our best shot and hopefully it’ll be good” but now that I’ve heard how it all sounds it’s “Oh my God! It worked! It’s great! This is amazing!” But hey, I don’t want to over-sell it… You can decide for yourself. Tune in this Sunday August 30th 2009 at 10pm on Triple M in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide or online. It’s Semi-Pro Radio. This week it’s  THE Big Show with David M. Green, Matty B, Tim Wray, Nick Godfrey & Adam Navarro and I can honestly say it’s some of our finest and funniest work to date. And we had a damn good time doing it!

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green
Look out for the Larry the Lawnmower sketch…

  • THE Big Show! That’s… 3 Ms

    He-he-hey!

What’s up? No time to wait for you to answer. Get a load of this…

You can hear the audio fruits of last week’s recording day in the form of “THE Big Show” on the tree that is the Triple M network in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide this Sunday August 30 10pm-midnight as part of Semi-Pro Radio! We reveal some ridiculous movie trailers, weird stores and what some people have carelessly left lying around Triple M. Plus Nick’s tips on avoiding Swine Flu, a trip down That’s Sexist lane, prank calls with a Smiddy soundboard, lawnmowers coming out the back-lot and some other junk we managed to throw together at the last minute before we were shown the door!  THE Big Show! It’s funny (51% new material).

It really has been a fantastic experience. If nothing else it’s been an excuse to catch up with Matty B again, whom I haven’t seen since he last left Adelaide to return to Sydney about 18 months ago. He came over for 2 weeks and the whole team (Matty B, Nick, Adam, Tim & myself) all met every couple of days to discuss, write, plan, analyse, nit-pick and then record the show (in between just hanging out and wasting time). In a way it would have been easier if we were doing 20 shows, but because we’re only doing it once, the pressure’s on to make it the best…

There’s still some finishing touches to make before it all goes to air in a week’s time. I’ll post more soon.

    Kind regards,
    David MMM. Green

  • Where no stand-up has gone before… probably

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JU_hQB3jdM

    Hello!

David M. Green again. Hey I made my quarterly stand-up appearance last Thursday at Adelaide’s “The Rhino Room.” Having recently watched “Carl Sagan’s Cosmos” and HBO’s “From the Earth to the Moon,” read up on NASA’s Apollo program and listened to The B-52’s complete discography, you can see how the above stand-up routine came to be. I seriously have no idea what’s “topical” any more. Free-to-air TV is a complete waste of time, in my opinion. I’m not too keen on radio at the moment either There’s no show that makes me want to go out of my way to watch it (Although I hear good things about this THE Big Show on Triple M). So hey, I make up my own damn entertainment!

The stand-up didn’t go quite according to plan, but the confusion probably actually made it funnier. Sometimes I prefer “rough around the edges” comedy to “slick.” For that very reason I always preferred Conan O’Brien to Leno. I just like the idea that any minute the whole thing could come crashing down around someone, in this case: me. I screwed up the Buzz Aldrin gag, got some of it out of order, and I was going to do a more detailed impression of Carl Sagan but interaction with some enthusiastic audience members forced me to move on. Final conclusion: good, not great. One tick.

    What do you think?

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green

  • So it comes to this… A COMEDY SHOW ON TRIPLE M!

    Hey Hey!

Okay, let’s get straight to it. Now that it’s been posted on the Triple M website, I can now reveal to YOU that Matty B, Nick Godfrey, Tim Wray, Adam Navarro and myself will be putting together a once off 2-hour comedy show that will go to air on the Triple M radio network on a Sunday night! WOW!

    THE Big Show Team Photo

But how did we manage to scam our way into this? Good question. For reasons unknown, Triple M and some advertising people came up with the idea for this contest called “Semi-Pro Radio.” It’s a contest open only to people who work for the advertising or “creative” industry. I entered as an employee of “Allan Miller’s FAST Voice-overs” (technically they count… pretty clever huh?). Entrants put together a show proposal. A number of finalists are selected (13) and those finalists, one of them being us with our show: “THE Big Show,” get to fill 2 hours of air time on Triple M. Then after all shows go to air a winner is selected, yada yada yada something about fabulous prizes… You can read all the details here.

But anyway… WE GET TO MAKE A COMEDY SHOW FOR TRIPLE M! This is a dream come true for me personally. Triple M’s “Get This” (from the comic genius of Tony Martin, Ed Kavalee & Richard Marsland) is still, and will probably always be, my favourite, and the GREATEST radio show of all time. I realise that there’s no way I could ever do a show as good as Get This. However, that’s what we’re gonna aim for. Hey, it’s a once off appearance. We might as well make it the absolute best, funniest, greatest 2 hours of radio we can. I don’t care if we don’t win. I just want to do a good show so afterwards I can say “yeah… that was pretty funny.” Plus I’ll get to reunite with Matty B, whom I rarely see these days as he lives in Sydney. It’s THE Big Show. Be on THE look out for it and of course, when I know more (like, WHEN it will air) I’ll put the info up here.

On a personal note, tomorrow will mark one year to the day since I met and had lunch with Richard Marsland (of Get This fame… obviously). I don’t think I would be doing this show on Triple M if it had not been for the advice and assistance he gave me. I owe him a lot and I really wish he was still here to see this.

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green

  • Stand-up Trip to Lol-Ville. Population: Hilarity.

    Hello!

David M. Green here in blog form. What a turbulent week… I did some stand-up comedy on Saturday night at the “Star Theatre” in Adelaide’s fabulous western suburbs. It didn’t go so well. Maybe it was the atmosphere. Maybe it was the audience. But most likely, it was because I freaking forgot the damn routine and just stood there silently for 30 seconds trying to remember my next joke. Actually, that was definitely it….

So needless to say I was feeling pretty down all week: Cognitive dissonance at work, people. Allow me to illustrate… I, David M. Green, believe that I am funny. However, on Saturday I did some stand-up and I bombed, mainly due to personal incompetence (Just for something different, I thought if I practiced LESS it would make for a more spontaneous performance. Instead, I couldn’t remember what I was going to say). Then there’s a conflict between my personal belief (ie. I’m funny) and reality (ie. I suck). And as in this biz, you’re only as good as your last ‘gig,’ for most of the week, I was a complete hack.

However, last night at the Rhino Room, I had another go. The routine was about 50% the same material, but the material I did repeat I re-worded for maximum comedy output. And this time, I killed! Everything just worked. The audience was great. The other comics were quite good for a “new-comedy” night. It was fantastic. So, dissonance corrected, confidence restored, reputation redeemed and self-esteem reacquired. If you haven’t watched it already, you can view the GOOD stand-up performance at the top of this blog entry. Your comments and feedback are always appreciated.

    Kind regards,
    David M. Green
